The international banking system is an enigma. There are more than 30.000 different banks world wide, and they hold unbelievable amounts of assets. The top 10 banks alone account for roughly 25 trillion US-Dollars. Today, banking can seem very complex, but originally, the idea was to make life simpler. 11th century Italy was the centre of European trading. Merchants from all over the continent met to trade their goods, but there was one problem: too many currencies in circulation.

In Pisa, merchants had to deal with seven different types of coins and had to exchange their money constantly. This exchange business, which commonly took place outdoors benches, is where we get the word "bank" from; from the word "banco", Italian for "bench". The dangers of travelling, counterfeit money and the difficulty of getting a loan got people thinking. It was time for a new business model: home brokers started to give credit to businessmen, while genevese merchants developed cashless payments.

Networks of banks spread all over Europe, handing out credit even to the church, or European kings. What about today ? In a nutshell, banks are in the risk management business. This is a simplified version of the way it works. People keep their money in banks and receive a small amout of interest. The bank takes this money, and lends it out at much higher interest rates. It's a calculated risk, because some of the lenders will default on their credit.

This process is essential for our economic system, because it provides ressources for people to buy things like houses, or for industries to expand their businesses and grow. So banks take funds that are unused by savers, and turn them into funds society can use to do stuff. Other sources of income for banks include accepting saving deposits, the credit card business, buying and selling currencies, custodian business and cash management services. The main problem with banks nowadays is, that a lot of them have abandoned their traditional role as providers of long-time financial products, in favour of short-time gains that carry much higher risks.

During the financial boom, most major banks adopted financial constructs that were barely comprehensable and did their own trading in habit to make fast money, and earn their executives and traders millions in bonuses. This was nothing short of gambling and damaged whole economies and societies. Like back in 2008, when banks like Leeman Brothers gave credit to basically anyone who wanted to buy a house, and thereby put the bank in an extremely dangerous risk position. This led to the collapse of the housing market in the US and parts of Europe, causing stock prices to plummet, which eventually led to a global banking crisis, and one of the largest financial crises in history.

Hundreds of billions of dollars just evaporated. Millions of people lost their jobs and lots of money. Most of the world's major banks had to pay billions in fines and bankers became some of the least trusted professionals. The US government and the European Union had to put together huge bailout packages to purchase bad assets and stop the banks from going bankrupt. New regulations were put into force to govern the banking business, compulsary bank emergency funds were enforced to absorb shocks in the event of another financial crisis. But other pieces of tough new legislation were successfully blocked by the banking lobby

Today, other models of providing financing are gaining ground fast. Like new investment banks, that charge a yearly fee and do not get commissions on sales, thus providing the motivation to act in the motivation in the best interests of their clients. or credit unions - cooperative initiatives that were established in the 19th century to circumvent credit sharks. In a nutshell, they provide the same financial services as banks, but focus on shared value rather than profit maximisation. The self proclaimed goal is to help members create opportunities like starting small businesses, expanding farms or building family homes while investing back into communities.

But it also works for industry - lots of new technology companies started out on kickstarter or indiegogo. The funding individual gets the satisfaction of being part of a bigger thing, and can invest in ideas they believe in. While spreading the risk so widely, that, if the project fails, the damage is limited. And last but not least, micro credits. Lots of very small loans, mostly handed out in developping countries that help people escape poverty. People who were previously unable to get access to the money they needed to start a business, because they weren't deemed worth the time.

Nowadays, the granting of micro-credits has evolved into a multi-billion dollar business. So, banking might not be up your street, but the banks' role of providing funds to people and businesses is crucial for our society and has to be done. Who will do it and how it will be done in the future is up for us to decide, though.

She is said to cover her mouth with a cloth mask, a fan or a scarf. If you approach her, shell ask you if you think shes pretty. If you answer yes, she will remove the mask and when the victim screams they will be slashed from ear to ear until they look like her. Even if you say no, shes said to follow you home and brutally murder you that night.

8. Daruma-san

This urban legend is more of an old game passed down through the years. You shower in a bath, turn off the lights and chant -Daruma-san fell down- while you wash your hair … its said that you will see a woman in your mind. She is Daruma-San. This legend dates back to ancient times in Japan where its known as Hito-bashira. Back then, there was a belief that a human sacrifice sealed inside a structure would make a foundation more stable. This means that many old Japanese buildings are said to contain the spirits of the people who were sacrificed during their construction. One famous example is Matsue Castle where a woman was sealed inside the foundations during its construction. Now her spirit is said to haunt the castle and whenever a woman dances there, the castle shakes violently. Many building owners in Japan are open about their building being a Human Pillar.

4. The Snake Woman

This one comes from the old Japanese folklore pf Nure-onna which translates to wet woman. She is often described as having the head of a woman and the body of a snake - with long claws, snake eyes and jet black hair.  She carries with her a childlike bundle to lure in her victims. If a person tries to pick up the baby, they find its not a child at all. The bundle then becomes very heavy and stops the victim from fleeing. The snake woman then uses her long tongue to suck all of the blood from the victims body until they die.

She is a demon women that often appears in Japanese folk folklore. She will often appear as an old woman asking for help but if you get to close, she will slice you open with a knife and eat you. She is said to be the tormented spirit of a woman who accidently killed her pregnant daughter and unborn grandchild in an effort to find a cure for her friends child being sick. She was told to bring them the liver of an unborn child but when she finally killed her victims, she found they were her own family.

2. The Dream School

dangerous situation  [Music]  so he went out the front door it ran to  the alley by going around the building  when spacado got to the alley he saw a  man with a gun in his left hand  and an 18-inch machete in the right hand  standing with battalion  saw spasato and he shouted tony help me  he has a gun clenbutelli tried to run  but patelli had previously undergone two  surgeries on his hips  so he didn't move quickly  the iron man caught the 72 year old man  by the back of the shirt  he pulled him back and pushed him to the  ground  he then started attacking patelli with  the machete  spasado ran to a construction truck that  was parked nearby  he told the workers to call 9-1-1 and he  grabbed a shovel  once pasado got back to the alley he  told the attacker to stop  and started banging the shovel on the  ground  but the man continued to attack patelli  when the attacker was finished he walked  down the alley out to the road  he got into a silver dodge magnum  station wagon  and he drove off  unfortunately by the time first  responders arrived it was too late to  help 72 year old eddie patelli  he had been stabbed in the left side of  the chest the lower abdomen  the chest bone and in the solar plexus  he also had cuts on his left ear and his  lower back  his right hand had defensive wounds  he lost about a quarter of all the blood  in his body  the police were at lost to the motive  when the killer came into the restaurant  it appeared he made no attempts to steal  anything  also why would the CREEPIEST URBAN LEGENDS killer force patelli  into the alley  if it was robbery patelli was a 72 year  old man with mobility issues  so it had been easy for the killer to  push him down and take anything you  wanted  something else that the police couldn't  figure out is why would the killer  attack him with a machete  instead of shooting him  in the alley the police found a  cardboard box that contained the machete  [Music]  based on the box the murder weapon was a  nicholson 18-inch machete  the police also found several clear  plastic bags  the place whereas the pitelli's murder  was connected to organized crime  they said that they had received several  tips concerning organized crime  and they had not ruled out that  possibility  this sketch was developed based on  eyewitness accounts  the killer was described as a white or  light-skinned hispanic man  in his late 20s he was clean-shaven  and he had dark hair he was about five  foot seven  and weighed around 160 pounds  at the time of the murder he was wearing  a white t-shirt a black hoodie  and blue jeans he was also carrying a  backpack  over one of his shoulders and the killer  still alive today  he would approximately be in his mid-40s  a man DEATHS REMAIN UNSOLVED was recorded on a camera at a  restaurant next door to mamma mia's  however the footage isn't clear and you  could not see the man's face  only these stills have been released  the police believe that this figure may  be the killer  [Music]  the friends of family of eddie patelli  are hoping that the case will be solved  soon  after 15 years the police want to close  what they consider to be  the grisliest unsolved murder in the  santa clarita valley  [Music]  number one jody cooper  carrie wood is an unincorporated  community in northern idaho  it is home to only a few hundred people  in early 1992 jody cooper lived there  with her common-law husband  41-year-old robert crockett who went by  the name p  also living with them was jodie's son  from a previous marriage  17-year-old jeremy cooper and the son  she had with pete  eight-year-old kenneth crockett they  lived in an isolated house that was  surrounded by pine trees  [Music]  jody worked as a college nursing  instructor  [Music]  1992 was a leap year  two hours into february 29th 1992  there was a brutal attack in the master  bedroom of the family's home  41 year old p crockett who was seriously  injured but conscious  came into the room of his son kenneth  pete had been hacked slashed and stabbed  several times  kenneth who was unharmed helped his  father out of the house  pete and kenneth made their way to a  neighbor's home that was about a  thousand feet  from their own home the neighbors called  the police  first responders rushed to the area  pete was taken to the hospital and he  ultimately survived  he had broken bones in both arms in a  fractured skull  the master bedroom was bathed in blood  on the bed was 41 year old jody cooper  who was clearly dead  she had suffered 23 wounds  her hands were nearly severed  his blade that she put up her hands to  try to defend herself  it was initially thought that the murder  weapon was an axe or a hatchet  but the medical examiner said that the  weapon was a long  thin bladed instrument most likely a  machete  notably absent from the house that  morning was jody's 17 year old son  jeremy about an hour after the murder  the police found jeremy walking down the  road towards his home  he was immediately picked up and brought  to the police station  and then questioned regarding his  whereabouts for the time of the attack  jeremy did not have a clear alibi  he said he had snuck out of the house to  meet up with a pair of friends  [Music]  the police talked to one of his friends  eighteen-year-old jason detel  the detail said he had no idea jeremy  was planning on meeting up with him  [Music]  to tell did say that he was out driving  that morning and he came across  jeremy who was walking beside the  highway  he picked him up and drove him part of  the way home  the police checked the clothes that  jeremy was wearing  on his black jeans they found two  nickel-sized blood stains  they checked his glasses and discovered  a blood smear that was not visible to  the naked eye  at the crime scene the forensic expert  found a bloody fingerprint  on the door leading out of the house  it turned out that the print came from  jeremy's right ring finger  so hours after the attack jeremy was  arrested  [Music]  the police continued to question the  friend who jeremy was supposed to meet  that night  jason to tell  to tell told the police that jeremy  hated his parents that he talked about  getting rid of them  details said that he kept a machete in  his pickup truck  but had been missing since the murderer  he said that was possible that jeremy  put the machete in his backpack  the day before the attack  [Music]  forensic evidence backed up the theory  that the tel's machete was the murder  weapon  flecks of black paint were found in  jody's wounds and in a wall that had  been struck with the murder weapon  detail had used black spray paint to  paint the machete black  [Music]  as 17 year old jeremy cooper was being  held in the county jail  the case against him fell apart  there was no disputing that jeremy's  bloody fingerprint was found on the door  it was the fingerprint from his right  ring finger  the problem was that the fingerprint  wasn't visible to the naked eye  it was only found after it was sprayed  with a chemical that reacts a protein in  blood  the police could not tell what the  bloody fingerprint was put there  if it could have been there for over a  year  another problem is is that on the night  of the murder jeremy had cut his right  ring finger  so he could let the print there earlier  that night and cleaned it up  the police had no way to tell whose  blood it was or if it was even human  or animal blood  then there was the blood smudge on the  lens of jeremy's glasses  it also was invisible to the naked eye  a dna test was performed on the smudge  it turned out to be jeremy's blood  the two small blood stages on his pants  were tested and the results were  inclusive  jeremy's lawyer pointed out that the  murder was a bloodbath  the killer definitely would have been  covered in blood  here ago if jeremy had been the killer  they would have found a lot more blood  on him  than two small stains on his pants  another problem was motive  [Music]  jeremy admitted that he and his  stepfather did not get along  he said they were like two strangers who  lived in the same house  but he loved his mother and he had no  reason to kill her  [Music]  he also didn't despise his stepfather  enough to kill him  also no other evidence connected jeremy  to the murderer  p crockett couldn't remember much about  the attack and he did not get a good  look at the assailant  the murder weapon was never found  jeremy didn't have a criminal record a  history of disciplinary problems  or any known mental health problems  since there was absolutely no evidence  connecting jeremy to the murder  six months after he was arrested in  september 1992  jeremy's lawyer went to the idaho  supreme court  he argued that jeremy was being  unlawfully imprisoned  a month later after spending 261 days in  jail jeremy was released on a 25 000  bail during his time in jail  jeremy turned 18 and he missed his high  school graduation  after being released on bail jeremy  moved to las vegas nevada  to live with his paternal grandparents  the charges against him were eventually  dismissed  but they could have been refiled at any  time  preet crockett said that after jeremy  was released  he was afraid for his own safety and the  safety of his son  [Music]  jeremy was asked if he knew who killed  his mother and he said he had theories  but he wouldn't elaborate he also said  he wasn't worried about being charged  again  because they wouldn't find any evidence  that connected him to the murder  because he didn't have anything to do  with the murder  jeremy's father believes he was set up  [Music]  jeremy's lawyer said that the police  ignored evidence that implicated  other people he hired a private  investigator  and the private investigator looked at  jason nattel's truck  and he found blood the police never  searched to tell his truck  or tested the blood  [Music]  the morning of the murder jeremy was  supposed to meet up with two friends  and one of them was to tell the other  friend was a young man named corey stark  in stark's vehicle a bloody rag was  found  [Music]  after it was found stark disappeared  from the area  he reappeared months later and he  eventually gave a sample of his dna  but the results of those tasks are  unknown  jeremy's lawyer did not accuse the town  stark of being involved in the murder  what he pointed out that the police  ignored other potential evidence  because they were solely focused on  jeremy  it's been over 19 years since the murder  of jody cooper  and no other arrests have been made  in 2019 a sheriff's deputy said progress  has been made in the case  the deputy said that many people thought  that the murder might be related to the  fact  that p crockett was growing marijuana  [Music]  but the deputy said that they do not  think that the attack was drug related  he said that they have gone back and  interviewed people  who were persons of interest  he said that some of their stories were  inconsistent with what they said  back in 1992 he said that it doesn't  necessarily make them guilty  because they could just have a bad  memory  but he said that these inconsistencies  were worth exploring  the friends and family of jody cooper  are hoping that one day soon  the police will finally close the case were on  vacation in normandy france  the family consisted of john his 35 year  old wife  rahman their daughter ten-year-old  martine  their son's eight-year-old philippe and  one-year-old laura  for their vacation they rented a  farmhouse  [Music]  on august 27 1971 a neighboring farmer  went over to the farmhouse where the  family was staying  their vehicle was there but he did not  see or hear the family  he made his way into the house and he  found a horrible scene  john and his three children ten-year-old  martine eight-year-old philippe  and one-year-old leron were all dead  [Music]  their bodies were in blood-soaked beds  a bloody axe was found near one of the  beds  [Music]  it was quickly determined that the  family had been hacked to death with the  axe  the authorities were alerted and they  came to the farm  they searched for rahman he was missing  from the house  about a hundred yards from the farmhouse  there was a well  a searcher looked down into the well and  he saw a human body  it was determined that was the body of  35 year old ramon jueno  the police believe that rama got the axe  and hacked her family to death  one by one as they slapped  when she was done murdering her family  she went and jumped to her death in the  well  if there was a motive behind the  massacre it has never been made public  number two angelica vazquez  in the spring of 2013 the vasquez family  lived on paintbrush street  in mesquite texas  their home was in a quiet neighborhood  by all accounts they seem like a typical  family  [Music]  44 year old marcelo and 43 year old  angelica  have been married for 23 years  they moved from mexico to the united  states in the 1990s  they had two children 21 year old  paulina and 18 year old alejandro  [Music]  alejandro lived at home and he was  attending a community AMERICAN URBAN LEGENDS college  [Music]  he also worked part-time at blockbuster  video  paulina was studying criminal justice at  the university of northern texas  in denton texas  she lived in an apartment off campus  marcelo worked as a long-haul trucker  angelica had worked at a cafeteria in a  school  until may 2012.  [Music]  unfortunately angelica had been  diagnosed with breast cancer  she had a double vasectomy and in early  2013  she finished chemotherapy  on march 8 2013 pauline was home because  of spring break  [Music]  that night pauline her father marcelo  and her brother  alejandro drank some alcohol  angelica did not drink with them  the next morning at 6 30 am a woman  called the police  because she thought she heard gunshots  coming from the family's home  a police officer drove to the home and  found no signs of a break-in  or first entry he knocked on the door  but got no answer  the officer couldn't legally enter the  home so he laughed  he returned twice that day and still no  one came to the door  four days later the officer decided to  stop by the house  [Music]  he noticed that the newspaper and the  mail had not been picked up in several  days  the officer entered the home and found  the dead body so the family members  [Music]  all their bodies were found in different  rooms  they had all been shot with a nine  millimeter handgun most likely while  they were sleeping  in the master bedroom was the body of 43  year old angelica vazquez  the gun was found on the floor beside  her bed  it was clear that angelica had shot her  44 year old husband  her 21 year old daughter and her 18 year  old son  what wasn't clear was why she did it  angelica did not leave a suicide note  everyone who knew the family was shocked  by the triple murder suicide  friends and family said that they seemed  like a happy family  the police had never been called to  their home  angelica did not have a history of  mental illness  one theory is that angelica had  post-traumatic stress disorder  from battling cancer  however this is only speculation  the only person who knew why angelica  killed her family  is angelica and it appears that she took  the secret of her motivation  to her grave so the vasquez's friends  and family  will probably never know what was going  on in angelica's mind  on the quiet saturday morning  number one bonita jacks  [Music]  bonita jacks was born two days after  christmas in 1974.  she grew up in charles county maryland  she dropped out of school in the 10th  grade when she was 17 years old  she had dropped out because she was  pregnant  in january 1991 bonita gave birth to a  daughter  britney jacks five years later  bonita gave birth to another daughter  tatiana jax  [Music]  in 2000 25 year old bonita jack started  dating 31 year old nathaniel fogel  together they had two daughters nikaya  who was born in 2000  in a jaw who was born the next year  for several years the family had a  problem finding a place to live  in august 2006 a non-profit group placed  them in a row house in washington dc  [Music]  the year before that bonita and her  mother fell out of contact  but benina's mother didn't have any  concerns about her daughter or her  granddaughters  [Music]  friends and neighbors of the family said  that benina was a good  and doting mother her four daughters  were always bathed  their hair was always done and they wore  clean clothes  [Music]  problems first arose in 2004 when  benina's eldest daughter  brittany was 13.  she started to become interested in boys  and several boys were interested in her  benita would call brittany a [ __ ] and a  [ __ ] in front of the other children  [Music]  she also started calling britney jezebel  bonita also locked brittany up in her  bedroom  in 2006 benia's boyfriend nathania fogel  was sick with cancer  [Music]  in november 2006 he lost his battle with  cancer  after this people noticed a huge change  in bonita  [Music]  she stopped taking care of her children  they were often seeing wearing dirty  clothes and their hair was a mess  in early spring 2007 the girl stopped  going to school  in march and april 2007 a social worker  visited the home  several times but benita would never  allow her to enter  even when the social worker came with a  police officer  bonita would not allow them into the  home  [Music]  the social worker made several requests  that child welfare investigator  check on the four girls  but no one ever did  in may 2007 bonita moved all the  furniture out into the backyard  once went by in 2007 became 2008.  on january 8th 2008 two u.s marshals  came to the house to serve an eviction  notice  bonita had not been paying the rent for  some time  initially bonita wouldn't let them in  but the marshals forced their way in and  they immediately smelled something awful  [Music]  they went upstairs to one of the  bedrooms REAL HORROR STORIES  they found the mummified bodies WORLD URBAN LEGENDS of three  girls next to each other on the floor  bugs were crawling all over the bodies  [Music]  the bodies were lined up in size and  they had white t-shirts on  the second bedroom was sealed with duct  tape  the marshals got the door open  inside the room was the mummified body  of an older girl  she was nude and a white t-shirt had  been draped over her body  she was lying in a pool of dried blood  a steak knife was found on the ground  near her body  [Music]  bonita was arrested and brought to the  police station  she was questioned and she gave long  rambling answers  she said that her daughters have been  possessed by demons  the most powerful demon jezebel had  taken over britney's body  vanilla said she thought that when the  demons died the girls would be brought  back to life  she claimed that she didn't murder the  children  instead they died in their sleep  she said the five-year-old to jah the  youngest died first  bonita said that nakaya and tatiana  thought it was funny that she had died  [Music]  she said that they slept with her body  that night  the next morning she discovered that  six-year-old nakai had died in her sleep  then eleven-year-old tatiana died a  short time later  all this was going on seventeen-year-old  brittany was locked up in her bedroom  [Music]  vania said that one morning she went  into brittany's room  and found her dead on the floor  panini explained that the furniture was  moved at side because it had been  infected by the demons  [Music]  because of the state of the bodies the  autopsies were difficult on two fronts  the first was determining the causes of  death  one theory was that bonita starved them  to death  it was later determined that britney had  most likely been stabbed to death  but she may have not been stabbed with a  knife found in her room  that knife had absolutely no trace of  blood on it  [Music]  not even microscopic traces of blood  were found  it was thought that ja was beaten and  strangled to death  the other two girls had most likely been  strangled to death  it was also clear that the girls have  been tortured  [Music]  the other difficulty with the autopsies  was determining when the girls died  [Music]  at first the medical examiner thought  that they had been dead for a month or  two  [Music]  but then more experts weighed in and  they thought that they had been dead  anywhere from three  to eight months what is known  is that seventeen-year-old brittany was  the first to die  she was last seen alive about 10 months  earlier in march 2007  the last time anyone saw any of the  girls was in june 2007  a woman had dropped off when needed  social security checks  and she saw the two youngest girls  nikaya and ajah  [Music]  benita was subsequently charged with  four counts of first-degree murder  and four counts of first-degree child  cruelty  benina jax went to trial in july 2009  she pleaded knock ld  bonita had refused to plead not guilty  by reason of insanity  the trial lasted two weeks  bonita was found guilty on three counts  of first-degree murder  and four counts of first-degree child  cruelty  she was acquitted of britney's murder  the judge said that there was not enough  evidence to prove that britney had been  stabbed to death  [Music]  in december 2009 bonita was sentenced to  120 years of prison  without the chance of parole  after the bodies were discovered it led  to a major investigation  of the child and family services agency  six employees ended up being fired  [Music]  the district of columbia agreed to pay  2.6 million dollars to the heirs for the  dead girls  bonita is currently incarcerated in a  prison mental health unit  in fort worth texas  at the time of this
